Genes that are up-regulated by androgen are named U1 to U25, and genes that are down-regulated by androgen are named D1 to D4. The induction fold before and after 48 hr of androgen replacement in the prostate of a 7-day castrated rat on Northern blot is determined by using Kodak Digital Science 1d image analysis Software. The abundance of mRNA was estimated by comparing Northern blot and genomic Southern blot signals when hybridized in same reaction. We have assumed that each cell contains about 500,000 mRNA molecules of 2.5-kb average size and that the haploid genome size of the rat is 3 × 109 bp. Kinetic type: E, early; D, delayed.
