The K₂ value in the presence of Mn²⁺ was calculated by using eqs 3-5 under Experimental Procedures, the values for the observed and maximal phosphorothioate effects listed in Table 3, and a k_pol value of 30 s^-1.

K_2,Mg²⁺ was calculated using K_2,Mg²⁺ = K_2,Mn²⁺/5 (2).

The k₊₃ value in the presence of Mg²⁺ was calculated by using eqs 3-5 under Experimental Procedures, the K₂ values listed above, the values .for the observed and maximal phosphorothioate effects listed in Table 3, and the k_pol values listed in Table 1.
