Rhein inhibited GFAT activity induced by high glucose in normal rat mesangial cells. Rat mesangial cells were seeded into six-well plates in RPMI-1640 medium containing 5.5 mM glucose. When they were 80% confluent, cells were divided into seven groups and fresh medium containing 5.5 or 30 mM glucose with or without rhein was added. After 24 h incubation, the cellular GFAT activity was assayed.
