Carbohydrate analyses of Arabidopsis thaliana and Nicotiana tabacum. Carbohydrate contents of plants grown in liquid seedling culture for 7 or 8 days in their respective growth media, as described in Figure 2. Values are given as the means and standard errors of three to four replicates. Unpaired two-tailed t-tests were used. Linear correlation analysis was performed and the respective correlation coefficients are given. Hexoses: glucose and fructose. (a–c) Relationship of phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (PRS) activity and carbohydrate accumulation of Arabidopsis: grey, A. thaliana expressing the wild-type PRS gene; black, A. thaliana expressing the mutant form; black square, empty vector controls. All sucrose values (P < 0.05) and hexose/sucrose ratios (P < 0.01) are significantly different from the controls. (d–f) Relationship of PRS activity and carbohydrate accumulation of Nicotiana: grey, N. tabacum expressing the wild-type PRS gene; black, N. tabacum expressing the mutant form; black square, empty vector controls. All sucrose values (P < 0.05) and hexose/sucrose ratios (P < 0.05) are significantly different from the controls. FW, fresh weight.
