^aGroups of female (4-week-old) BALB/c mice were vaccinated by subcutaneous injection with either saline, 10 μg rSdrG_N23, or 10 μg rHis-SdrG_N123 in 20 μg QS21 as adjuvant. At 2 weeks following the final vaccination, the animals were challenged by intraperitoneal injection of ∼5 × 10⁸ CFU of S. epidermidis 0-47. At 24 hours postchallenge, the mice were sacrificed and the bacteria in the spleen enumerated.
