Fungal infection elicits MTD activity in tobacco. Tissue from uninfected and infected tobacco and an isolated culture of the infecting fungus were collected, frozen in liquid nitrogen, and stored at −80°C. MTD activity was measured in extracts as the rate of mannitol-dependent conversion of NAD+ to NADH as described in Materials and Methods. Error bars represent the SE of three independent observations. n.d., not detected.
