The 10 functions of the network were assigned to 10, 7, 5, or 4 nodes. Each node performed thus 1, up to 3, up to 5, or up to 6 functions, respectively, as shown in the color legend. For each mulfi-functionality value, 1000 networks were created, choosing multifunctional nodes at random. For each network, we introduced from 1 to 10 mutations. The main graph reports average epistasis values±SEM. The inset shows the correlation between robustness and total epistasis. Total epistasis was computed by summing all epistasis coefficients for mutation numbers larger than 1. Robustness was calculated as detailed in the text.
