Chromatin state maps reveal a stereotypical pattern at active genes. (A) In mouse ES cells, the transcription start site for the Calm1 gene (blue arrow) is marked by H3K4 tri-methylation, a trithorax-associated mark, while the remainder of the transcribed region is marked by H3K36 tri-methylation [11]. (B) Evidence from model systems supports a central role for initiating and elongating RNA polymerase II in recruiting the relevant histone methyltransferase enzymes [20].
