(B) Relative mRNA expression of sspA determined by real-time RT-PCR in vitro and in vivo. In vitro cultures of each strain were grown for 24 h at 37°C in YPD. Mice were infected intranasally with the wild-type strain Af293, the ΔstuA mutant, and the stuA-complemented strain (n = 3 mice per time point), and lungs were removed for expression analysis at 24 and 72 h after infection. The expression levels of all genes were normalized to the expression level of the endogenous control gene TEF1.
