MALDI-TOF analyses of lipid A from the wild type (A) and the pst mutant K3 (B) grown in LP medium. The prototype lipid A species (hexa-acylated 1,4′-bis-phosphate) corresponds to the major peak in both spectra, at m/z 1,797. One variant that is visible in the K3 spectrum (*) includes the addition of pEtN residues to each of the 1′ and 4′ lipid A phosphate groups (m/z 2,043).
