ATP-dependent uptake of (A) 65Zn(II) and (B) 109Cd(II) in everted membrane vesicles of E. coli. Vesicles were prepared from cells of strain W3110 induced with 1 mM ZnSO4. Transport was assayed with 10 μM 65ZnSO4 or 109Cd acetate. Additions: (▪), no energy source; (▴), 5 mM MgATP; (•), 5 mM MgADP; (♦), 5 mM MgATP but 2-mercaptoethanol was omitted from the assay buffer.
