(A) With diffusion (P = 2×10−13 L min−1), faster R decay drastically reduces total noise (black line) by decreasing the extrinsic noise (blue line) without significantly affecting the intrinsic noise (red line). Without diffusion, faster R decay has little effect on either the intrinsic or the extrinsic noise (dotted lines). (B) Fast R decay significantly reduces the gain of low-frequency extrinsic noise components transmitted to the complex in the presence of diffusion. For these calculations, P = 2×10−13 L min−1, γR = 0.02 min−1 for slow R decay, and 2 min−1 for fast R decay.
