Culture conditions included growth in LBS (rich medium) or MS, either aerobically or anaerobically, and with or without 40 mM TMAO. OD595 measurements were used to determine the mid-log and stationary phases (see Table 3).

Promoter activity is reported for the average of three independent cultures (± standard error of the mean). Significant differences between Miller unit values for a particular promoter with and without TMAO under specific growth conditions were determined using Student's t test. ND, not determined; V. fischeri will not grow under these conditions.
