Cross-linking of ActA on the bacterial surface. When L. monocytogenes is incubated with increasing amounts of formaldehyde, ActA forms higher order aggregates. ActA dimers begin to appear at 0.075% formaldehyde, and trimers are the predominant species at 0.5%. The cross-linked multimers clearly represent a minor percentage of the ActA in the samples.
