Prediction of response. A: poststimulus time histogram (PSTH) of NL neuron (dashed line) in response to frozen noise, overlaid with the prediction of response based on the STRF (solid line). Because our model is linear, and therefore does not include the effects of rectification, the model predicts negative firing rates, leading to the visible troughs not present in the PSTH. This trend is expected to be more conspicuous in ICcc, where strong rectification effects have been demonstrated (Christianson and Peña 2006). B: distribution of correlation coefficients between predicted and observed firing rates (>80 ms of stimulus) for 10 NL neurons. C and D are similarly for 22 ICcc neurons.
