Reversible cross-linking of a surface-grafted polymer brush changes the mechanical properties (in particular, the friction as measured by atomic force microscopy) of the polymer brush surface. The kinetics of the cross-linking interaction have a profound effect on the friction, demonstrating that the cross-links function as stress-bearing entanglements in the friction experiment.
