(A) During transcription the window size for folding the non-coding strand moves 5′ to 3′ as SS14.9 is formed from its precursor. (B) As mfg must choose an unpaired base to initiate each fold, S-IB occurs at each paired base of each stem. Two examples of S-IB are highlighted, triggered at nt 114 preceding Site 1 (blue), and at nt 141, preceding Site three (brown). The latter fold first occurs at nt 77 (brown), prior to the initial formation of Stem 1 (seen Table 1).
