Quantitative comparison of hippocampal PDHC E1α immunostaining in nonischemic and postischemic animals. Staining is expressed as number of particles in the different subfields of hippocampus: (A) CA1, (B) CA3, and (C) DG. In hyperoxic ventilated animals, the staining diminished significantly in all subfields of the hippocampus through the entire rostrocaudal extent, whereas in the normoxic ventilated animals the staining statistically was not significantly different from the sham-operated animals. Results are expressed as mean ± s.d. values; n = 3 per animal group. Statistical significance was calculated using one-way ANOVA with Tukey–Kramer multiple-comparison test post hoc analyses, P < 0.05. a*: Significantly different compared with sham-operated and normoxic animals in the same rostrocaudal level. b*: Significantly different in rostrocaudal distribution within the same animal group.
