Effects of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) treatment. After TNBS administration, guinea pigs lost a small amount of weight compared with saline-treated animals. This weight loss was sustained until 6 days posttreatment (A) but had resolved entirely by 30 days (not shown). Sections from hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of rectum from saline-treated and TNBS-treated animals (B) show marked hypertrophy, edema, and leukocyte infiltration in the inflamed condition.
