Livers and blood were collected at 0, 1, 3 and 14 days after BDL. Necrosis (A) was quantified by image analysis of 10 random fields per liver. Blood was collected for ALT measurement (B). TUNEL-positive cells were counted in a blinded manner in 10 randomly selected fields using a 40× objective lens (C). *, p<0.05 vs BDL of corresponding time point (n = 4-5 per group). Caspase-3 activation 3 days after BDL was evaluated by Western analysis of cleaved caspase-3, as illustrated in blot images representative of 4 experiments per group (D).
