Immunohistochemical staining in control and IBD was scored semi-quantitatively from 0-3 and compared with inflammation grade. Inflammatory grades 1-3 are from patients with IBD. Control tissue (grade 0) is from the normal margins from patients without IBD who underwent resection for large adenoma or carcinoma. Expression of claudin-1 and claudin-2 is increased in an inflammation-dependent manner, while claudin-4 expression is more variably increased. Occludin expression was constant in all conditions.
