Scheme 2.

Scheme 2

Proposed Mechanism for the Conversion of Liposomal 1-Q3 from Lamellar (Lα) Liposomes to Inverted Hexagonal (H) DOPE Micellesa. a Step A: Na2S2O4 reduces the 1-Q3 lipids that are located in the outer layer of the liposome to 1-HQ3. Step B: 1-HQ3 dissociates into lactone 3-HQ3 and DOPE, as described in Scheme 1. Step C: release of encapsulated calcein dye occurs as a result of liposome collapse caused by DOPE layer-DOPE layer contact.
