Survival of V. parahaemolyticus is mediated by a factor secreted by A. castellanii. V. parahaemolyticus (V. para) POR1 was cultured in the presence of A. castellanii for 21 days but separated from amoebae by a 0.2-μm-pore-size membrane (triangles). As a control, bacteria were cultured in PYG alone (circles) and in the presence of A. castellanii (squares) as in the legend to Fig. 1. The number of bacteria was determined as described for Fig. 1. Results are reported as numbers of total bacteria; the limit of detection is 10 CFU.
