The proposed representative diagram of the stresses and forces occurring in the IVD in case of a single uniaxial load. The NP applies a compressive force in the opposite direction up to 1.5 times that of the original force. The NP also redistributes forces radially (red arrows). The radial force gets counterbalanced by the AF (blue arrows). The outer regions of the AF experience large tensile and hoop stresses up to five times the applied force (purple arrows).
