Consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon Chesterfield Royal Hospital (b Wimbledon 1957; q King's College Medical School, London, 1981; MD, FRCS, FRCS Orth), died from stomach cancer on 26 August 2003.

Martyn began his training programme in Hull, followed by a research fellowship in Belfast. This led to his MD thesis in 1990 on the survival of joint replacements. A senior registrar post in Belfast gave him experience in the management of major trauma. He returned to Hull as a consultant in 1993 before moving to Chesterfield in 1998, where he established a service for shoulder and elbow problems. He leaves a wife, Marie, and two sons.
