The CI was calculated as the recovery ratio of mutant to wild-type bacteria, divided by the initial inoculum ratio. The CI values in the table are geometric means of five independent infections of mice. *, CI values significantly different from 1.0 (P < 0.05). ND, no detection of the lrp(Con) mutant; ND4, no lrp(Con) mutant was detected in four of the five mice (five lrp(Con) mutants were detected in the fifth mouse).
