(A) The results of Experiment 2. Note that rats displayed impaired freezing if the vehicle was injected prior to training and muscimol was injected prior to testing (Condition V/M). However, if muscimol was injected prior to both conditioning and the retention test (Condition M/M) or just prior to conditioning (Condition M/V), rats were not impaired. This means that when the ventral subiculum is disabled before conditioning, the extrahippocampal system can support contextual fear conditioning. However, if this output system is functional at the time of conditioning, it prevents the extrahippocampal system from supporting contextual fear.
