In vivo synthetic rates of fatty acids in livers of wild-type and Elovl5−/− mice. Five female mice from the indicated groups were fed a chow (4% fat) or the chow diet supplemented with 0.2% arachidonic acid and 0.05% DHA for 7 days and then injected intraperitoneally with 3H-labeled water (40 mCi in 0.2 ml of water). One h after injection, livers were removed and fatty acids were extracted. Incorporation of 3H-labeled water into the newly synthesized fatty acids was measured as described in Experimental Procedures. Each bar represents the mean ± SE of the values from five mice. * P < 0.05 of Student's t-test.
