In (a), there is a discernible slip velocity at the wall, giving a measurable but small slip length. In (b), the slip velocity at the wall is negligible, but the slope of velocity profile near the wall is very steep. Because the flow quickly becomes fully developed, it takes the appearance of a large slip length.
