Whole-body hypoxic preconditioning (WHPC) attenuates hypoxic pulmonary edema and hypoxia-induced increase in pulmonary vascular permeability. Exposure to hypoxia for 6 hours resulted in (A) an increase in lung tissue water content (n = 8 for each group) and (B) elevated levels of albumin in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) (n = 10 for each group). Both of these hypoxia-induced pathological changes were attenuated by pretreatment with WHPC.
