Two mechanisms by which genetic control of development is regulated. Cyst and trophozoite-specific genes in Entamoeba histolytica can be regulated by chromatin structure or by promoter factor occupancy. Of the developmentally regulated genes, 73 cyst-specific genes are regulated by histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDAC) and 15 trophozoite-specific genes are regulated by HDAC. The number of genes in each category that are regulated by promoter occupancy is unknown.
