Growth regulatory pathways of the host cell are perturbed by adenovirus. Ad proteins act on the host cell signalling network to uncouple DNA replication from anti-growth signals, senescence and apoptosis. Similar growth deregulation is caused as a result of tumour cell mutations. Therefore, viruses and viral proteins represent a natural system that is used to study growth deregulation programs with the aim of gaining insight into the process of carcinogenesis.
