Effect of cell cholesterol on the activity of HMG-CoA reductase. Expression of the enzyme was induced in human fibroblasts by overnight cholesterol starvation. The cells were then briefly exposed to different cholesterol-cyclodextrin mixtures to adjust their cell (mostly, plasma membrane) cholesterol level, and enzyme activity was assayed in homogenates an hour later.
