Distribution of mast cells in wild-type and PTPα-null mouse tissues. Toluidine blue-stained mast cells were counted in the dermis (A) and hypodermis of back skin sections (B), in ear sections (C), and in sections of stomach mucosa (E) and submucosa (F) of tissues from wild-type (PTPα^+/+) and PTPα-null (PTPα^-/-) mice. Mast cell numbers were counted in 10 sections of each tissue sample from each of three mice of each genotype, and are represented as cells/cm of tissue. D, cells obtained by peritoneal lavage from mice of each genotype (n = 15) were FACS analyzed for c-Kit- and FcεR1-positive mast cells, and for total cell number. The mast cell percentage of the total cell number is shown. All data were analyzed using analysis of variance.
