The “global” Bend and Twist angles describe the relative orientation of the adjacent pentamers in the p53 response element (see text). The positive sign of Bend indicates the major groove bending in the CA|TG tetramer. The area in the contour map with the prohibitive interaction energy of >20 kcal/mol is cross-hatched. The areas with the energy <−15 kcal/mol are shaded. The crosses correspond to conformations of free DNA in solution (F), in the complex with p53DBD (DBD), and in the complex with wt p53 (WT), as found by phasing gel analyses. They denote the following (Bend, Twist) parameters: F (0°, 170°), DBD (17°, 179°), and wt (27°, 187.5°), as deduced from Table 1.
