GnRH mRNA levels in the preoptic area-anterior hypothalamus, normalized to cyclophilin mRNA, were quantified by real-time PCR. Data are shown for the OVX cholesterol (A) and estradiol-treated (B) rats. No overall effect of age or drug treatment was detected, although a significant interaction of age × treatment was detected, which was attributable to the OVX, cholesterol-treated middle-aged group, in which ifenprodil caused a small but significant decrease in GnRH mRNA levels. *, p < 0.05. Veh = vehicle, Ifen = ifenprodil. For panel A (cholesterol rats), N=6, 6, 8 and 8 for young vehicle, young ifenprodil, middle-aged vehicle, and middle-aged ifenprodil, respectively.
