Schematic representation of the TR-LIFS apparatus. The fiber-optic probe enabled remote delivery of the excitation light to and collection of the fluorescence emission from the rabbit aorta as exposed through the midline sternotomy and laparotomy. Note: In future clinical implementation, the fiber-optic probe can be integrated in any of the conventional catheter-based techniques currently used for the interrogation of arterial vessels including angioscopes and intravascular ultrasound catheters.
