Maize shoot apices cultured in the absence (A) or in the presence of the auxin transport inhibitor NPA (B) were laser microdissected (C) and used in qRT-PCR analyses of candidate genes to identify six genes (D) downregulated in NPA-treated, leaf-arrested SAMs. Note the elongated, pin-shaped morphology of the NPA-treated SAM (B) that fails to initiate new leaf primordia.
