Optimal probe density depends on the nature of the aptamer and its target. For example, while maximum gain is obtained for the cocaine sensor (left) at very low probe densities (the highest gain, 200%, is observed at a probe density of 1.6 × 1012 molecules/cm2), optimal density for the thrombin sensor (right) is achieved at intermediate densities.
