Baseline lipid measurements are modulated by polymorphisms in IL-6. Polymorphisms associated with the proinflammatory IL-6 gene (e.g., IL6-174C>G) are responsible for modulating serum levels of IL-6. Additionally, these same polymorphisms modulate various serum lipids levels associated with MetS, including large HDL particle levels and TG levels. P values were adjusted for age, gender, BMI, physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, drugs for diabetes, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, and hormone use in women. Data from Shen et al.²¹
