Acid tolerance assays with S. mutans UA159 grown under aerobic or anaerobic conditions. For killing assays (A), aerobically or anaerobically grown cells were exposed to pH 2.8 for 30, 60, or 90 min. The growth rate of S. mutans at pH 6.0 (B) was monitored using a Bioscreen C system under aerobic or anaerobic conditions.
