Voltage maps computed by subtracting ERPs recorded to L2 words (French) from ERPs recorded from L1 words (English) in Experiment 1. Note that computing the subtraction in this direction (L1-L2) results in the larger early posterior negativity from L1 ERPs (see Fig. 4) producing a larger effect at posterior sites (blue areas at 300 and 400 ms) and the larger late anterior negativity from L2 ERPs (see Fig. 4) producing an effect at anterior sites (red areas at 600, 700 and 800 ms).
