Microglial activation in brain is induced by ZnCl2 injection. A, Photomicrographs show microglial morphology and F4/80 expression (green) in mouse hippocampus after stereotaxic injection of ZnCl2 or saline vehicle. The needle track is visible at the right-hand edge of each composite image. Microglia in wild-type mice of both the C57BL/6 and 129S strains showed increased F4/80 immunoreactivity and activated morphology after ZnCl2 injections. These changes were attenuated in C57BL/6 p47phox−/− mice and the 129S PARP-1−/− mice. Scale bar, 50 μm. Quantified data are shown in B. n = 3–5; *p < 0.05 versus saline control.
