CMI remodels intrinsic cardiac neuron phenotype. Phenotypic changes in nNOS expression and mast cell density were quantified in 6 preparations for each condition. The percentage of nNOS-immunoreactive cells was determined by counting the total number of MAP2-positive cells and expressing the number of nNOS cells as a percentage in time-matched control preparations (solid bar), surgical time controls (sham; dark shaded bar), and CMI tissues (light shaded bar). The mast cell density was determined by counting the number of histamine-immunoreactive cells as a function of area (mm²) in control (hatched bar) and CMI tissues (open bar). CMI resulted in a significant increase in both the percentage of nNOS cells and the density of mast cells. #P < 0.05.
