Several sections 500 μm proximal and distal to the fracture site were stained for the analysis. Ten regions as described in the Materials and Methods section were analyzed in each section. Osteoclast and osteoblast surface as well as the number of PCNA⁺ cells were counted, and the ratio of PCNA⁺ cells to total cells was calculated and expressed as a percentage.
