Maltose transport in Pyrococcus furiosus cells. Accumulation of 10 mM [14C]-maltose was assayed under anaerobic conditions at 80 °C (filled circles). Inhibition of maltose accumulation in maltose-grown cells was studied by adding a 100-fold excess of unlabeled maltose (open circles), maltotriose (filled squares) or trehalose (oen squares). Transport studies were performed in triplicate.
