(A–C) Each bar represents the average number of neurons in 100 μm thick by 500 μm wide nonoverlapping cortical areas beginning at the pial surface. For each graph, n represents the number of samples in which labeled cells were counted. (D–F) Bars represent the density of neurons in each layer, and the thickness of the bars has no relationship to the thickness of the layer. Notice the difference in laminar distribution of different populations of calcium-binding proteins. (G) A schematic distribution of FEF neurons projecting to SC (black triangles) and to V4 (white triangles).
