Ligand-bound receptors activate two antagonizing pathways that establish the front and back of the cell [38]. The “front” pathway activates F-actin polymerization and the “back” pathway activates myosin contractions. The two pathways are proposed to inhibit one another at five points (four are denoted by the dashed lines and the other results from the reciprocal action of PI3K and PTEN on PIP3 formation).
