The amplification phase and possible nuclear processing of dsRNA (dashed arrows) are integrated with the initiation of antiviral silencing (solid arrows). For convenience we also use the initiation phase in this figure to describe antiviral silencing in animal cells where amplification may not occur. The possible steps targeted by different VSRs are red.
