In all but one case the gain changes at the 2 transitions differed significantly, with no difference between cases in which the target that stepped back was flickering (1st and 3rd columns), vs. steady (2nd and 4th columns) (*P < 0.01 by one-tailed Tukey–Kramer post hoc test).
